National Mentoring Month
Why it matters
EMBRACE MENTORSHIP
This month highlights the profound impact of mentoring on individuals and communities—bringing hope and direction to many lives.
THE STORY
National Mentoring Month, observed every January, serves as an annual call to action to encourage mentorship across the nation. With its roots tracing back to 2002, this initiative was established by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Corporation for National and Community Service. Its purpose is to highlight the critical role that mentors play in the lives of young people and to inspire individuals to become mentors themselves.
Mentoring can take many forms, ranging from formal programs to informal guidance. Whether through school-based initiatives, community organizations, or workplace mentorships, the impact of such relationships is profound. Research indicates that mentored individuals are more likely to pursue higher education and achieve career success. This January, the spotlight is on creating connections that nurture personal and professional growth.
Numerous organizations participate in National Mentoring Month, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and the MENTOR National Mentoring Partnership. These groups emphasize the need for volunteers to step forward and support youth in their communities. With over 4.5 million young people in the United States needing a mentor, the call for action is urgent and vital.
As we celebrate National Mentoring Month, we are reminded of the power of guidance and support. Whether you choose to mentor someone or seek guidance from a mentor, every action counts. Let’s take this opportunity to foster connections that can change lives for the better.
A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.
