National Pet Day
National Pet Day on April 11 was founded in 2006 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to celebrate the joy our companion animals bring us — and to raise awareness for the millions still waiting in shelters. The day isn't about buying a pet; it's about honoring the ones already in our homes and remembering the ones who need homes.
How to celebrate
Five things, all free:
- Extra attention for whoever's at your feet. Long walk, long snuggle, new game.
- Send a donation to a local shelter — even $10 buys a lot of kibble.
- Share a photo of a past pet with someone who remembers them. That's a gift both ways.
- Foster a pet for a weekend, if your life allows. Shelters need it.
- If you've been thinking about adopting, today's a good day to visit the shelter. No obligation, just meet.
Celebration ideas by audience
For families
Family pet appreciation day. New toy, extra treats, a walk where everyone comes.
For kids
Let them design a pet ID card — name, favorite food, best trick. They'll take it seriously.
For couples
Plan a pet-friendly outing. Trail, patio, brewery with a dog patio, whatever fits.
At the office
Share your pet photos on the team chat. Morale instrument.
At school
Classroom pet appreciation — even if there's no class pet, kids can draw portraits of their pets at home.
In your community
Volunteer dog-walking hours at a local shelter. One afternoon. Enormous impact.
On your own
Bedtime snuggle. They'll love it. You'll love it more.
