National Women’s History Month
Why it matters
HONORING WOMEN
This month, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of women in shaping our history and future.
THE STORY
National Women’s History Month was officially recognized in March 1987, thanks to the efforts of the National Women’s History Project. This month-long celebration aims to highlight the contributions of women in various fields, including science, politics, arts, and social movements. By dedicating a month to women’s achievements, the initiative encourages educational programs and events that promote awareness and appreciation of women’s roles in history.
Every year, the National Women’s History Alliance selects a theme that resonates with current societal issues. For instance, 2023’s theme, ‘Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,’ underscores the importance of women’s narratives in literature, film, and media. This focus not only acknowledges the women who have shaped cultural narratives but also inspires future generations to share their own stories.
Throughout the month, organizations, schools, and communities engage in activities that commemorate women’s achievements. Events may include lectures, art exhibits, and performances that celebrate the diverse contributions of women across cultures. Notable figures such as Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, and Malala Yousafzai serve as reminders of the relentless fight for equality and justice that women continue to champion.
As we reflect on the past and look toward the future, National Women’s History Month invites everyone—regardless of gender—to participate in discussions about women’s rights and gender equality. By honoring the achievements of women, we not only celebrate their impact on history but also empower future generations to continue the fight for equality in all aspects of life.
A woman with a voice is, by definition, a strong woman.
