Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Why it matters
JOIN THE AWARENESS
This month, we encourage everyone to get involved and make a difference in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
THE STORY
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, with a five-year survival rate of just 10%. This month, organizations and advocates around the country aim to raise awareness and funding for research into this disease. Early detection remains a significant challenge, as symptoms often do not appear until the cancer is advanced—making public education all the more critical.
Founded in 1999, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has been at the forefront of efforts to increase research funding and provide support for patients and their families. With November designated as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, events are held nationwide to honor those affected and to mobilize communities for greater awareness and action. Local chapters engage in activities ranging from awareness walks to informational webinars.
The importance of research cannot be overstated. According to the National Cancer Institute, pancreatic cancer research funding has been historically low compared to other cancers. However, recent initiatives have aimed to change that narrative, advocating for increased federal funding and supporting innovative research projects that could lead to breakthroughs in treatment and early detection.
As we observe Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, it is vital to recognize the role of community engagement. Individuals can participate by attending awareness events, sharing educational resources online, or simply wearing purple to show support. Together, these actions can contribute to a stronger collective effort to combat this formidable disease.
Awareness is the first step toward change.
