Valentine’s Day
Why it matters
CELEBRATE LOVE
Valentine’s Day is a special occasion to honor those we cherish.
THE STORY
Valentine’s Day has its roots in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, celebrated in mid-February. The festival honored fertility and the coming of spring. It was later Christianized and named after St. Valentine, a martyr who is said to have performed secret marriages for couples in love. Over the years, the day transformed into a celebration of romantic love, as poets and writers began to associate it with courtly love during the Middle Ages.
In the United States, Valentine’s Day gained popularity in the 19th century, with the first mass-produced valentines appearing around 1840. By the early 1900s, the tradition of exchanging cards became widespread, and it was not long before other gifts, such as chocolates and flowers, joined the celebration. Today, Valentine’s Day is recognized not only as a day for lovers but also as an opportunity to express affection toward friends and family.
Modern celebrations often include elaborate gestures and gifts, from candlelit dinners to extravagant vacations. Social media has also influenced how people express their love on this day, with many sharing photos and stories of their celebrations online. While traditional gifts like roses and heart-shaped chocolates remain popular, personalized gifts and experiences are becoming increasingly favored as individuals seek to create lasting memories.
Internationally, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in various ways. In Japan, women give chocolates to men on February 14, while men reciprocate a month later on White Day. In South Korea, it is customary for couples to celebrate their love on the 14th of each month throughout the year. This global perspective highlights the unique ways love is honored, reminding us that while customs may differ, the essence of love remains universal.
Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.
