World Blindness Awareness Month
Why it matters
JOIN THE AWARENESS
This October, let’s unite to promote understanding for those living with visual impairments.
THE STORY
World Blindness Awareness Month was initiated in 2012 by the World Health Organization to highlight the plight of those with visual impairments. This month serves as a call to action for communities worldwide to address the barriers faced by those who cannot see. As we observe this month, it’s essential to recognize the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in all aspects of life.
In the United States, approximately 7.6 million people aged 16 and older live with a visual disability. The American Foundation for the Blind works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for these individuals. Events throughout October include community workshops, educational seminars, and local gatherings aimed at raising awareness and support for those affected by blindness and visual impairments.
Globally, the numbers are staggering, with the World Health Organization estimating that 285 million people are visually impaired. The majority of these individuals live in low-income countries, where access to medical care and rehabilitation services is limited. Awareness initiatives help garner support for programs aimed at prevention and treatment, ensuring that more individuals receive the help they need.
As we move through October, let us take time to learn, engage, and advocate for those affected by visual impairments. By fostering a community of understanding and support, we can contribute to a more inclusive society that recognizes and uplifts the voices of those living with blindness.
Awareness is the first step towards inclusion.
