World Day Against Trafficking
Why it matters
STAND AGAINST TRAFFICKING
Join us in raising awareness about human trafficking, a critical issue affecting millions worldwide.
THE STORY
Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights that affects every country around the world. According to the International Labour Organization, an estimated 40.3 million individuals are trapped in modern slavery, with a significant proportion being victims of trafficking. This day serves as an opportunity to shine a light on this pressing issue and promote efforts to combat it globally. Awareness is crucial in the fight against this crime, and every effort counts.
The United Nations established World Day Against Trafficking in Persons in 2013 to encourage governments, civil society, and individuals to take action. Each year, a specific theme is designated to focus attention on particular aspects of trafficking, highlighting the need for comprehensive responses. The theme for 2023 is ‘Victims’ Voices Lead the Way,’ emphasizing the importance of listening to and empowering those who have experienced trafficking.
In the United States, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) was passed in 2000, establishing a framework for combating human trafficking. Awareness campaigns and education programs have since been developed to inform the public about the signs of trafficking and how to report it. Yet, despite these efforts, challenges remain, including the need for more resources devoted to prevention, victim support, and law enforcement training.
Individuals can contribute to the fight against trafficking on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons by educating themselves and others, supporting local anti-trafficking organizations, and advocating for policy changes. By working together, communities can play a vital role in eradicating this crime and supporting survivors in rebuilding their lives.
Together, we can make a difference.
