Zoo & Aquarian Month
Why it matters
CELEBRATE WILDLIFE
Zoo & Aquarian Month invites you to explore and appreciate wildlife, with a focus on conservation and education.
THE STORY
Zoo & Aquarian Month, celebrated every April, highlights the vital role that zoos and aquariums play in wildlife conservation and education. These institutions not only provide a home for many species but also engage the public in efforts to protect biodiversity. They serve as hubs for research, rehabilitation, and community involvement, making them essential in the fight against extinction.
Across the United States, over 350 accredited zoos and more than 200 aquariums welcome millions of visitors each year. These venues offer unique opportunities for people to learn about diverse animal species and their habitats. Programs often include educational workshops, guided tours, and hands-on activities designed to foster a deeper understanding of wildlife and the challenges they face in the wild.
In addition to education, zoos and aquariums contribute to critical conservation initiatives. Many support breeding programs for endangered species and participate in global efforts to protect habitats. For instance, the World Wildlife Fund collaborates with various zoos to promote awareness and action for species such as the Amur leopard and the African elephant, both of which face severe threats in the wild.
As we commemorate Zoo & Aquarian Month, it is an opportune time to reflect on our own roles in wildlife conservation. By visiting local institutions, supporting conservation efforts, and engaging in community activities, we can all contribute to preserving the rich tapestry of animal life on our planet.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
