GLOBAL SMURF DAY

Every year on the Saturday closest to June 25, the world turns a little bit bluer. Global Smurf Day celebrates the tiny blue heroes created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, along with the values they stand for: respect, tolerance, team spirit, fun, and caring for nature and each other. In 2027 the day falls on June 26. This is Global Smurf Day, a worldwide party for everyone’s favorite little blue friends, and it is open to absolutely everyone.

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

The Smurfs began as the creation of Pierre “Peyo” Culliford, a Belgian cartoonist born on June 25, 1928. The little blue villagers first popped up in 1958 in the pages of Le Journal de Spirou, a Belgian comics magazine, and they were an instant hit. They conquered television when Hanna-Barbera launched the animated Smurfs series in 1981, turning them into icons that several generations now recognize on sight, from Papa Smurf’s red cap to Smurfette’s golden hair.

The first Global Smurf Day was held on June 25, 2011, and it started as a movie promotion with genuine heart. Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation coordinated events around the world to celebrate Peyo’s birthday and the upcoming release of The Smurfs, which opened in theaters on July 29, 2011. Among those joining the festivities was Peyo’s own daughter, Veronique Culliford, giving the corporate shindig a real family blessing.

The 2011 events doubled as a Guinness World Records attempt for the largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour period across multiple venues. To claim the title, organizers had to top 2,510 blue-painted, white-hatted participants, with official adjudicators stationed in 12 cities around the globe. It was exactly as delightfully ridiculous as it sounds, and fans have kept the party going every year since.

The tradition rolled on in style. On Saturday, June 22, 2013, Global Smurf Day returned ahead of The Smurfs 2, this time with more than 40 Smurf Ambassadors from 28 countries. The ambassadors were officially appointed in Brussels by Veronique Culliford in a ceremony held beneath a Smurf statue, then boarded a train for Paris to spread blue cheer across the French capital. Since then, the formula has stayed simple: every year, on the Saturday closest to June 25, Smurf lovers everywhere celebrate.

In 2027, June 25 falls on a Friday, which puts the celebration on Saturday, June 26. Observing the day is as joyful as the characters themselves: watch the show, read the comics, dress up in blue, or hold a contest to see who can name the most Smurfs. Share it all with the hashtag #GlobalSmurfDay, and remember the motto the day is built on: one for Smurf, Smurf for all.

THE STORY BEHIND GLOBAL SMURF DAY

💙 It Is All About Peyo’s Birthday
The Smurfs were created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre “Peyo” Culliford, born June 25, 1928. The whole celebration is timed to his birthday, which is why the day always lands on the Saturday closest to June 25.

🎦 A Movie Stunt That Became a Tradition
The first Global Smurf Day was held on June 25, 2011, cooked up by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation to promote The Smurfs movie, which opened July 29, 2011. Peyo’s daughter Veronique Culliford joined the worldwide festivities, and fans have kept the party going every year since.

🏆 The Great Gathering Record
The 2011 events doubled as a Guinness World Records attempt for the largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs within 24 hours across multiple venues. Organizers had to top 2,510 blue-painted, white-hatted participants, with adjudicators stationed in 12 cities around the world.

📺 From Comic Panels to Saturday Mornings
The Smurfs first appeared in 1958 in the Belgian comic magazine Le Journal de Spirou. They conquered television when Hanna-Barbera launched the animated series in 1981, turning the little blue villagers into icons several generations now recognize on sight.

📅 Why June 26 in 2027
The rule is the Saturday closest to June 25. In 2027, June 25 falls on a Friday, so the celebration lands on Saturday, June 26. (In 2026, the day fell on June 27, the Saturday closest to a Thursday June 25.)

Ask what the day actually celebrates and the answer is bigger than cartoons. According to the official Smurf world, Global Smurf Day honors the values the little blue characters represent: respect, tolerance, team spirit, fun, care for nature and for each other, and believing in the future. It is also simply a great excuse to introduce a new generation to the Smurfs’ mushroom village, because every kid deserves to know who Papa Smurf is.

The celebration keeps finding new moments to be extra smurfy. The 2025 edition landed on June 28 and coincided with the Belgian release of the fourth Smurf movie, with Brussels turning blue for the occasion and the city’s famous Manneken Pis statue dressed as a Smurf. Looking ahead, 2028 shapes up as a milestone year: the Smurfs turn 70, and Peyo himself would have turned 100. If ever there was a reason to start practicing your Smurf costume, this is it.

🎦 Smurfs on the Big Screen
The little blue heroes have headlined multiple movies, starting with The Smurfs in 2011 and The Smurfs 2 in 2013, both of which got their own Global Smurf Day blowouts. A fourth film arrived in 2025, with its Belgian release timed to that year’s celebration. From hand-drawn comics to computer animation, the Smurfs keep finding new screens.

🎂 A Milestone on the Horizon
The Smurfs debuted in 1958, which means 2028 marks their 70th birthday, the same year Peyo would have turned 100. Fans are already wondering whether the anniversary will bring the biggest Global Smurf Day yet. Start stretching those blue-paint muscles now.

The official playbook for the day is as cheerful as the characters. The best way to spend it, per the Smurfs themselves, is to watch the Smurfs, whether that means the classic episodes, one of the movies, or introducing the whole blue crew to kids seeing them for the first time. Readers can grab a Smurf comic, gamers can fire up a Smurf game, and the competitive can battle friends to name the most Smurfs. Costumes are strongly encouraged, and the whole thing gets shared with #GlobalSmurfDay.

📺 The Cartoon That Conquered Mornings
The Hanna-Barbera animated series that launched in 1981 turned a Belgian comic into a global phenomenon, and the entire original run has since been released on DVD. For millions of fans, Saturday mornings in the 1980s meant one thing: a half hour in the mushroom village.

👥 A Record Built for Blue
The 2011 Guinness attempt set the template for how this day parties: hundreds of people in white hats and blue face paint, gathering in city squares across 12 cities at once. It remains one of the only world records you can attempt with a paintbrush and a sense of humor.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE

🎦 Watch the Smurfs
Queue up the classic Hanna-Barbera episodes or one of the movies and settle in. If your kids have never met Papa Smurf and Smurfette, today is the perfect day for introductions.

💙 Go Full Smurf
Dress the part: white hat, white pants, and blue face paint. Host a best-dressed-Smurf contest and award extra points for anyone brave enough to play Gargamel.

🏆 Hold a Name-That-Smurf Showdown
Gather friends and see who can name the most Smurfs, from Brainy to Clumsy to Jokey. The loser has to perform their best Smurf laugh in front of everyone.
