The story
The story of this day begins in 2008, when India brought a bold proposal to the World Health Assembly in Geneva. Led by Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, the delegation suggested a global alcohol-free day on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, honoring the leader who championed temperance as part of his philosophy of self-discipline.

The proposal won support from 11 Southeast Asian countries, and on the same day, 193 WHO member states signed a resolution to reduce alcohol-related harm. The following years saw the World Health Assembly adopt a global strategy on alcohol, and the day itself has been observed by health organizations, including the International Council of Nurses, ever since.
Today the message is hopeful rather than scolding. Alcohol affects nearly every organ in the body, from the brain to the liver, yet even short breaks from drinking bring measurable benefits: better sleep, more energy, and a clearer mind. World No Alcohol Day asks just one thing of everyone, which is to pause, reflect, and consider what a healthier relationship with alcohol could look like.
