The story

Every building tells a story. On the first Monday of October, World Architecture Day invites the world to read the stories written in stone, steel, glass, and timber, and to honor the architects who wrote them.

The day was created in 1985 by the International Union of Architects, the global organization for the profession. It shares its date with the United Nations World Habitat Day on purpose, linking the art of building with the global goal of adequate shelter for all.

This year's theme, 'Housing is a human right. Build it.,' turns the spotlight on the housing crisis and calls on architects to advance fair, affordable housing through design, research, and advocacy. It is a reminder that architecture is not only about skylines, but about people.
