National Paralegal Day
Every year on August 6, we honor the paralegals whose precision, diligence, and integrity keep the wheels of justice turning. They research the precedents, draft the documents, manage the cases, and sweat the details that decide outcomes, almost always without fanfare. In 2027 the day falls on August 6. This is National Paralegal Day, a day of recognition for the legal professionals who stand beside America's attorneys, and it is open to absolutely everyone.

This is National Paralegal Day, a day of recognition for the legal professionals who stand beside America’s attorneys, and it is open to absolutely everyone.
A paralegal is a person qualified by education, training, or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency, or other entity, and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. In plain terms, paralegals do the deep, exacting work that makes legal practice possible: legal research, drafting pleadings and contracts, organizing discovery, managing case files, interviewing witnesses, and keeping complex matters on track. They are often the steadiest hands in the office and the first to spot the detail that changes everything.
The date carries real history. On August 6, 1968, the American Bar Association created the Special Committee on Lay Assistants, the body that is now the Standing Committee on Paralegals and the ABA’s primary group focused on the utilization of paralegals throughout the legal industry. Because of that historical milestone, industry leaders, professional associations, and paralegal educators chose August 6 as the proposed National Paralegal Day. It is a date that honors not just today’s paralegals but the moment the profession itself was formally recognized by the nation’s leading legal institution, nearly sixty years ago.
The paralegal profession expanded significantly during the second half of the twentieth century, as law firms and legal departments increasingly relied on skilled legal professionals to manage complex matters, improve efficiency, and support high-quality legal services. Over time the role developed into a distinct and valued career path requiring substantive knowledge, sound judgment, organization, adaptability, and strong project-management skills. The day also corrects a stubborn misconception: paralegals are not “glorified secretaries.” Many invest heavily in professional development and education, and as they advance, many take on broader responsibilities, leading projects, managing teams, developing talent, and improving how legal services are delivered.
Recognition for the profession has been building for years. The International Practice Management Association, together with the American Association for Paralegal Education, the American Bar Association, the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, NALA (The Paralegal Association), and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, hosts programs highlighting the profession, its continued evolution, and the contributions of paralegals and allied legal professionals. NALA’s own position paper argues the case plainly: just as other professions are honored with a day of recognition, a National Paralegal Day provides a platform to thank paralegals for their tireless work alongside their attorneys. Recognition, the paper notes, is long overdue.
The modern paralegal’s toolkit would be unrecognizable to the legal assistants of 1968. Today’s paralegals navigate e-discovery platforms, manage vast digital document productions, coordinate across time zones, and adapt to technologies that reshape the practice of law every few years. Industry voices marking the day emphasize that paralegals have remained ready and steadfast through every one of those changes, upholding high standards and ethics while the ground shifts beneath them. It is a profession defined not by any single task but by a combination of qualities: substantive knowledge, sound judgment, organization, adaptability, and project management skill. That versatility is exactly why the role keeps growing, and why a single day can barely contain the gratitude it deserves.
Marking the day is simple and meaningful. Thank the paralegals in your office or your life, and name the specific work you have seen them do well, from flawless filings to calm under deadline pressure. Employers can spotlight their paralegal teams, host a lunch, or invest in professional development opportunities as a tangible thank-you. Paralegals themselves can mentor a student considering the field or take a moment to reflect on how far the profession has come since that August day in 1968. However it is observed, the message is the same: the legal system runs on the dedication of people whose names rarely appear on the letterhead, and they deserve their day.
THE STORY BEHIND NATIONAL PARALEGAL DAY
⚖ August 6, 1968
On this day, the American Bar Association established the Special Committee on Lay Assistants, now the Standing Committee on Paralegals. Industry leaders later chose August 6 for National Paralegal Day precisely because of this milestone: the moment the organized bar formally recognized the paralegal’s role in the legal system.
📜 The Official Definition
A paralegal is a person qualified by education, training, or work experience who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. The definition captures the profession’s essence: real legal work and real expertise, carried out under a lawyer’s supervision.
🏛 A Profession Comes of Age
The profession grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century as firms and legal departments leaned on skilled professionals to manage complex matters. What began as support work became a distinct career path demanding judgment, organization, and deep substantive knowledge.
🙅 Not “Glorified Secretaries”
One of the day’s missions is correcting misconceptions. Paralegals invest heavily in education and professional development, and many advance into leadership, managing teams and projects and improving legal-service delivery. The title deserves the same respect as any profession’s.
👏 Recognition Long Overdue
NALA’s position paper makes the case: other professions have their days of honor, and paralegals have earned theirs. Associations across the industry now host August 6 programming celebrating the profession’s evolution and the people who uphold its high standards and ethics every day.
