Fast facts

More than 17 millionPeople around the world live with cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood; its impact ranges from weakness in one hand to almost a complete lack of voluntary movement.

The story

Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood, caused by disturbances in the developing fetal or infant brain. It is a lifelong condition, and there is no known cure. For some, it means a weakness in one hand; for others, almost a complete lack of voluntary movement. Yet people with cerebral palsy are, first and always, people: students, workers, athletes, artists, parents, and advocates.

World Cerebral Palsy Day began in 2012 with a simple but powerful idea: to give people with cerebral palsy a platform to be seen, heard, and celebrated. Founded by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance in Australia and United Cerebral Palsy in the United States, it has grown into a global movement spanning more than 100 countries. The first campaign, called Change My World, invited the community itself to dream up solutions, and the winning idea, a solar-powered wheelchair, was built and presented in 2013.

Since then, campaigns like Millions of Reasons and #UniquelyCP have reached tens of millions of people, pushing for accessible technology, fair policy, and full inclusion. Buildings around the world light up green on October 6, a quiet, bright signal of solidarity. The work continues because the goal has not changed: a world where every person with cerebral palsy has the same rights, access, and opportunities as anyone else.
