World Rat Day

Every year on April 4, the world's most misunderstood pets finally get their party. World Rat Day honors the fancy rat, the clever, affectionate, whiskery little companion that has been winning hearts one shoulder-ride at a time. In 2027, the celebration lands on Sunday, April 4, and rat lovers everywhere will be handing out treats, snapping photos, and telling anyone who will listen that rats deserve better press.

Fast facts

The fancy rat is the domesticated brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), and its intelligence is often compared to that of dogs; pet rats can learn their names and perform tricks.

Spoil your pet rats with treats and toys, throw a tiny party, or visit the small animals at a local shelter.
