EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP MONTH

Every October, Employee Ownership Month celebrates the millions of Americans who do not just work at their companies, they own a piece of them. Championed by The ESOP Association, the month honors employee stock ownership plans that build retirement security, loyalty and pride. When workers are owners, everybody wins. This October 2027, the owners are throwing the party.

Employee Ownership Month is observed every October. Since the late 1980s, companies with employee stock ownership plans have marked the month with outreach, education and good old-fashioned celebration, sharing what it means to be part of an employee-owned enterprise. The ESOP Association, the leading voice for the movement, supports the month with resources including sample proclamation language that governors use to declare October officially Employee Ownership Month in their states.

An ESOP is a benefit plan that gives employees an ownership stake in the business where they work, paid for by the company’s future profits rather than the workers’ own pockets. The numbers are remarkable. The National Center for Employee Ownership reports roughly 6,400 ESOP companies covering nearly 11 million active participants, while a Department of Labor report found total participation reached 15.1 million in 2023, up 8 percent over the previous decade. Total assets in ESOP plans now top two trillion dollars.

Why does ownership change everything? Research shows that employee-owned companies tend to outperform their peers, with studies indicating productivity gains of 4 to 6 percent per year. ESOPs provide a strong, secure retirement that supports families, improve employee retention and engagement, and have been shown to narrow the wealth inequality gap. In a 2019 survey, 72 percent of Americans said they would like to work for a company owned by its employees. The appeal is not hard to understand.

October is when that pride goes public. Companies host trivia games, photo contests, team lunches and town halls, hand out swag, share employee-owner stories and run community service projects. Culture committees plan the fun, executives join in, and many firms use the month to educate newer hires about how the plan works and what their growing account balance means for the future.

Even if you do not work at an employee-owned company, you can join the celebration. Look for the Certified Employee-Owned mark when you shop, ask local businesses about their ownership story, or read up on how ESOPs help founders pass the torch while preserving jobs and community roots. Worker cooperatives are growing too, more than doubling to 820 in 2024, proof that the ownership idea keeps finding new shapes.

Ownership is more than a financial structure. It is a culture where people speak up, pitch in and take pride in work that is truly their own. This October 2027, raise a toast to the employee-owners who prove every day that shared ownership builds stronger companies and stronger communities.

How does an ESOP actually work? The company sets up a trust that holds shares on behalf of employees, and the business uses future profits to buy those shares from the owners over time. Employees do not purchase stock out of pocket. Instead, shares are allocated to their accounts as they work, and when they retire or leave, the company pays them cash for the value of their shares. It is ownership built through daily work, not a down payment.

The idea is spreading into new territory. Beyond traditional ESOPs, worker cooperatives, where employees own and govern the business through membership shares, have more than doubled in a decade. Employee ownership trusts, a newer model, let companies lock in employee ownership permanently. Different structures, same spirit: the people who do the work share in the value they create.

October also brings friendly competition to the movement. The ESOP Association’s annual awards celebrate outstanding employee-owned companies, and many firms use the month to recognize their own ownership champions, from the forklift driver with thirty years of perfect attendance to the new hire who asked the best question at the town hall. Recognition, after all, is the currency of an ownership culture.

There is a reason the month feels like a party. Ownership changes how people talk about work. Conversations shift from “the company” to “our company,” from punch clocks to possibilities. Employees suggest improvements, watch costs and celebrate wins because the wins are shared. That sense of shared fate is the secret ingredient no competitor can copy, and October is when employee-owners get to say it out loud.

The month is also a favorite recruiting season for employee-owned firms. Job seekers increasingly ask about ownership, and companies answer with open houses, career fairs and honest conversations about how the plan works. In a tight labor market, “you will own a piece of this place” is a sentence that stops talented people in their tracks.

Founders love October too. For owners thinking about succession, selling to an ESOP keeps jobs local, preserves the company culture and rewards the team that built the business. It is a legacy move disguised as a financial transaction, and Employee Ownership Month is when that story gets told most.

The month also has its own folklore. Ask around an employee-owned company and you will hear stories: the maintenance tech who retired with a life-changing account balance, the team that rallied to land a make-or-break contract because it was their contract. These are not just feel-good tales. They are the culture, passed down like family stories.

And the movement keeps welcoming newcomers. Each year, hundreds of business owners discover that selling to their employees is an option, and each year hundreds of companies take the first step. October is when many of them start, at a seminar, a webinar or a conversation that begins with a simple question: what if the workers owned this place?
