TWINS DAYS WEEKEND

Every August, on the first full weekend of the month, the town of Twinsburg, Ohio doubles its fun for Twins Days Weekend, the largest annual gathering of biological twins and other multiples in the world. Founded in 1976, the festival now draws about 2,000 pairs of twins from across the United States and around the globe. If you see double in Twinsburg, do not adjust your eyes. Just wave hello, twice.

The festival began with a simple idea and a rocky start. In 1976, a group of Twinsburg citizens, working from a concept developed by Ray Diersing, Sage Hiller, and Ari Hiller, proposed a celebration of twins to the city council. The council thought it was a bad idea and rejected it. The citizens persisted anyway, and the first Twins Days went ahead that summer. Fifty years later, their stubborn little festival has become the largest gathering of twins on the planet, and the town that once said no now throws open its doors.

Twinsburg itself is part of the story. It is the only city in the world named after its twin founders, which makes it the only place a festival like this could truly feel at home. Every summer since 1976, twins, triplets, quads, and their families have filled the town for three days of games, contests, picnics, and parades, turning the quiet suburb into the most double-take-heavy place on Earth, a title it has earned every single summer for half a century.

The 2027 festival, the 52nd annual, runs August 6 through 8, Friday through Sunday. The weekend officially kicks off with the famous Double Take Parade on Saturday, August 7 at 9:00 a.m., when spectators line the main street from the town square to the festival grounds at Glen Chamberlin Park on Ravenna Road. Registered twins march together in one enormous group, floats and walking pairs stream past the reviewing stand, and the whole town shows up to watch.

The festival has developed its own beloved traditions over the decades. Each year opens with a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner, sung by John and Jerry Starlet and signed in American Sign Language by Jamie Maassen and Jodie Qualkinbush. Twin-based contests and talent shows fill the stages, and an unwritten festival rule holds that identical twins dress identically, a custom that applies as much to 70-year-old men as to 17-year-old girls and to tiny babies wheeled around in fleets of twin buggies.

The weekend is playful, but it is also meaningful. Scientists attend in large numbers, using the presence of thousands of identical and fraternal twins to conduct voluntary twin studies on the genetic and non-genetic roots of human traits, and participating twins are customarily rewarded for their help. It is one of the rare festivals where having fun and advancing science happen on the same afternoon, sometimes in the same tent.

The international flavor keeps growing. At the 2014 festival, about 1,140 sets of multiples pre-registered, traveling from Nigeria, Brazil, Australia, Ghana, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, France, Italy, England, Belgium, Germany, Japan, China, and India. That year’s theme was pure joy: “Twinstock: Groovy in Twinsburg,” a peace-and-love celebration that proved the festival’s spirit translates into every language.

What keeps people coming back is the feeling of instant belonging. Twins spend their lives answering the same questions and hearing the same jokes, and for one weekend a year, everyone around them simply gets it. Strangers finish each other’s sentences. Matching outfits are the norm, not the novelty. It is a family reunion for a family you never knew you had, several thousand strong, and for one weekend nobody has to explain anything at all.

And the town loves it right back. Local businesses decorate, volunteers staff every corner, and the parade route fills with neighbors who have watched generations of twins march past. For residents, the festival is a point of pride and a highlight of summer. For visitors, it is the rare event that delivers exactly what it promises: twice the smiles, twice the laughter, and memories in duplicate.

Whether you are a twin, a triplet, a parent of multiples, or simply someone who loves a good parade, Twins Days Weekend has a place for you. Come for the contests, stay for the people, and do not be surprised if you leave already planning next year’s matching outfits. Just remember not to confuse it with National Twin Day, which is a different celebration in December. August belongs to Twinsburg, and Twinsburg belongs to the twins, two by two, all weekend long.

The weekend is also a bargain and a spectacle in the best small-town tradition. Admission to the festival grounds has stayed friendly, local shops and food vendors line the streets, and the contests range from look-alike competitions to twin-themed games of every kind, all built around the weekend’s playful two-player spirit. Crowds in the tens of thousands turn out, and the whole town seems to run on matching outfits and shared laughter for three straight days.

If you go, plan like a regular. The 2026 festival, the 51st annual, ran August 7 through 9, and each year the pattern holds: Friday for settling in and exploring, Saturday for the Double Take Parade at 9:00 a.m. sharp, and Sunday for the contests, talent shows, and one last stroll through the festival grounds. Book lodging early, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a camera, because the photo opportunities start the moment you arrive and do not stop until you leave. And if you are a twin, pack the matching outfit. It is practically the dress code.

Even if you cannot make it to Ohio, the weekend is easy to celebrate from home. Dress alike with a sibling or a best friend and spend the day finishing each other’s sentences. Host a look-alike contest at a family cookout, with prizes for the most convincing pair. Share your matching-outfit photos online and tag the friends who would brave the Double Take Parade with you next August. The heart of the festival is not really the contests or the crowds. It is the delight of finding your mirror image in another person, and that is something you can celebrate anywhere.
