The story

Easter is the greatest festival of the Christian church year. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his crucifixion, and it brings Lent, the long season of prayer, fasting, and penance before it, to its close in joy and redemption.

The way Easter's date is set goes back to AD 325, when the Council of Nicaea fixed the rule tying it to the spring full moon. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox of March 21, which is why it can come as early as March 22 or as late as April 25.

Easter is closely tied to the Jewish festival of Passover. In many European languages, Easter is still called by a form of the word Pasch, derived from Pesach, the Hebrew name for Passover.

The season has its gentle folk customs, too. Painted eggs and the Easter rabbit are rooted in older symbols of new life and spring, and the white lily, the symbol of the resurrection, fills churches as the special flower of Easter.
