International Drop a Rock Day

The day was created in 2015 by the Word Rocks Project, which invites rock painters around the world to inscribe stones with a shared annual theme and hide them for others to find. Past themes have included ‘You Matter,’ ‘Together,’ ‘Be the Light,’ and ‘Harmony,’ each one a pocket-sized reminder that someone out there is rooting for you.

The broader kindness-rocks movement owes much to Megan Murphy, who started the Kindness Rocks Project on Cape Cod. What began in 2014 as her personal habit of leaving encouraging messages on beach stones became a social media phenomenon in early 2015, inspiring inspiration gardens, geotagged kindness maps, and eventually a One Million Kindness Rocks Challenge with craft retailer Michaels.

The idea is beautifully simple: paint a smooth stone with acrylics or paint markers, seal it, and leave it on a park bench, a trail, or a library shelf. Finders often share photos online, and the rocks have been known to travel surprising distances. A gentle note for the responsible rock dropper: some parks and natural areas ask visitors to follow leave-no-trace principles, so public sidewalks, gardens, and community spaces are the kindest places to hide them.

On July 3, grab some paint and join in. In a world of digital noise, a hand-painted rock is refreshingly analog proof that kindness still travels best by hand.
