National Park Service Founders Day
Why it matters
HONOR OUR PARKS
National Park Service Founders Day reminds us of the importance of conserving our natural landscapes for future generations.
THE STORY
On August 25, 1916, the National Park Service (NPS) was born, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at preserving America’s natural wonders. Established under President Woodrow Wilson, the NPS was tasked with managing and protecting the growing number of national parks and monuments. This foundational moment set the stage for a legacy of conservation that continues to thrive today.
Over the years, the NPS has expanded significantly, now overseeing more than 400 sites, including national parks, historical parks, and monuments. With more than 18,000 miles of trails, these areas offer countless opportunities for exploration, recreation, and education. Each park tells a unique story, showcasing the diverse landscapes and cultures that define the American experience.
National Park Service Founders Day encourages individuals and families to reconnect with nature. Visiting a national park not only allows for personal reflection but also fosters a sense of community and stewardship. Many parks celebrate this day with special programs, guided hikes, and educational workshops, inviting everyone to deepen their appreciation for the environment.
As we celebrate this significant day, let us remember the importance of preserving these natural treasures. The NPS continues to advocate for conservation, education, and public enjoyment. Whether through hiking, volunteering, or simply enjoying the serenity of a park, each action contributes to the ongoing mission of the National Park Service.
The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value.
