NATIONAL SILENT E DAY

Every year on September 29, the tiniest letter with the biggest job in English gets its moment in the spotlight. National Silent E Day celebrates the quiet little e at the end of so many words, the letter that says nothing itself yet changes everything around it. In 2027 the day falls on a Wednesday, September 29. It is a playful celebration with a serious purpose: honoring the structured literacy instruction that turns struggling readers into confident, curious lovers of language.

Do not let the silence fool you. The final e may make no sound of its own, but it performs several critical jobs that completely change how words are read, spelled, and understood. First, it is the vowel transformer: it turns short vowel sounds into long ones, changing cap into cape and kit into kite with a single quiet letter. Second, it is the loyal companion of the letter v, because English words almost never end in v, so the silent e steps in as a partner in words like have and give. Third, it is the sound softener: placed after a c or g, it softens hard consonants, turning a hard c into the gentle sound in peace. And fourth, it is the word anchor, preventing confusion with plural suffixes and making sure every written syllable keeps its required vowel. One letter, four jobs, zero noise. That is efficiency.

The day was founded by Stacey Roselli, a Structured Literacy Specialist and Reading Interventionist with more than two decades of experience supporting students with language-based learning differences, including dyslexia. In 2014 she founded The Reading Village, a private educational organization serving children from kindergarten through high school, and she has also volunteered as Vice President of the International Dyslexia Association Florida Branch. Her mission is to advance structured literacy and empower young readers, and National Silent E Day is her fun, accessible way to bring educators, families, and communities together around that cause.

The National Day Calendar Registrar officially proclaimed National Silent E Day in September 2026, declaring September 29 the annual celebration. The 2026 observance was the inaugural year of festivities, which makes the 2027 edition on Wednesday, September 29, the second annual celebration. The day was established to highlight how explicit, structured literacy instruction empowers readers and spellers of all ages, especially students with language-based learning differences such as dyslexia. When the letter patterns of English are taught directly, reading stops feeling like random guessing and starts feeling like solving a puzzle.

That puzzle-solving spirit is exactly what the founder wants children to feel. “When children understand the rules and patterns behind our written language, reading stops feeling like random guessing and starts feeling like solving a puzzle,” says founder Stacey Roselli. “National Silent E Day is a fun, accessible way to bring educators, families, and communities together to celebrate foundational literacy skills and foster a lifelong love for reading.” The day spotlights the idea that foundational skills, taught with structure and care, help children become curious and confident readers, spellers, and lovers of the English language.

Why build a whole celebration around one letter? Because small things unlock big ones. The silent e is often one of the first patterns children master in structured literacy programs, and that first “aha” moment is magic. A child who once stumbled over hop and hope suddenly sees the system behind the spelling, and the whole language starts to make sense. For students with dyslexia, that explicit instruction is not a nice bonus. It is the key that opens the door. National Silent E Day turns that key moment into a party, inviting every classroom to marvel at what a quiet letter can do.

And there is plenty to marvel at. English is full of silent-e magic once you start looking. The letter stretches vowels, tames consonants, anchors syllables, and politely fills in where v cannot stand alone. It does all of this without ever being pronounced. On September 29, readers of every age are invited to notice the little letter doing its big job, to thank the teachers who reveal its secrets, and to celebrate the readers who are cracking the code one word at a time. Shout it quietly: the silent e deserves its day.

Classrooms have endless ways to make the day delightful. Students can race to build the longest list of silent-e words, act out the vowel-stretching transformation with dramatic flair, or design posters showing their favorite word pairs. Libraries can build displays around phonics and the magic of spelling patterns. Families can play word-flip games at the dinner table, turning pin into pine and glob into globe between bites. And every participant walks away with the same quiet superpower: the understanding that English spelling, for all its quirks, is full of patterns waiting to be discovered.

THE STORY BEHIND NATIONAL SILENT E DAY

📚 Founded by Stacey Roselli
National Silent E Day was founded by Stacey Roselli, a Structured Literacy Specialist and Reading Interventionist with more than two decades of experience. In 2014 she founded The Reading Village, an educational organization serving children from kindergarten through high school, and she has volunteered as Vice President of the International Dyslexia Association Florida Branch.

💡 The Vowel Transformer
The silent e’s most famous job is stretching short vowels into long ones. It turns cap into cape, kit into kite, and hop into hope, all without making a sound of its own. It is the closest thing English spelling has to a magic trick.

🤡 The V Companion and the Sound Softener
Because English words almost never end in the letter v, the silent e stands beside it in words like have and give. Positioned after a c or g, it also softens hard consonants, giving us the gentle c sound in peace.

⚾ The Word Anchor
The silent e prevents confusion with plural suffixes and ensures every written syllable retains its required vowel anchor. It keeps words tidy, readable, and anchored, a structural job nobody notices until it is explained.

🎯 Proclaimed in September 2026
The National Day Calendar Registrar officially proclaimed National Silent E Day in September 2026 for annual celebration on September 29. With 2026 as the inaugural year, the 2027 observance on Wednesday, September 29, is the second annual celebration of the quiet letter.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE

🔍 Go on a Magic-E Word Hunt
Hand young readers a book and challenge them to spot every silent e they can find. Have them read each word pair out loud, mad and made, fin and fine, and watch the vowel-stretching magic click in real time.

🏫 Thank a Literacy Teacher
Send a note of thanks to a reading specialist, interventionist, or classroom teacher who helps young readers crack the code. These educators turn letter patterns into lifelong skills, and they deserve their own celebration.

📱 Share the Pattern
Post your favorite silent-e transformation on social media and tell the world why the quiet letter rules. A little wordplay goes a long way toward spreading the love of reading.
