Fast facts
The story
In 1996, at a conference in Vienna, Austria, the International Egg Commission decided the world needed a day for the egg. The second Friday of every October became World Egg Day, a global platform to celebrate the egg's nutrition, versatility, and the farmers who make it all possible. Thirty years on, countries across the globe mark the day with festivals, food competitions, and farm tours.

It is easy to see why the egg earned its own holiday. Nutritionists call it nature's perfect package: one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world, rich in protein, essential fats like omega-3s, and disease-fighting nutrients. It is also famously affordable, which is why eggs play a starring role in food security from bustling cities to remote villages.
And then there is the fun. Scrambled, poached, hardboiled, sunny side up, or over easy, the egg shape-shifts across every cuisine on Earth. On World Egg Day, egg producers release cookbooks, hold recipe contests and music festivals, and spotlight the workers who produce and deliver this amazing food. Whether it comes from a chicken, duck, quail, or goose, today every egg gets its applause.
