World Radio Day
Every year on February 13, the airwaves still carry the heartbeat of humanity. Proclaimed by UNESCO's General Conference in 2011 and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly the following year, World Radio Day honors a medium that reaches the remotest villages and the busiest cities alike. February 13 marks the anniversary of the first United Nations Radio broadcast in 1946, a fitting birthday for a technology that simply refuses to fade.

3 ways to celebrate
Take a World Tour by Dial
Spend part of the day sampling stations far from home: a jazz hour from New Orleans, a talk show from Nairobi, a community broadcast from a small island town. Many stations stream online for free, so your kitchen radio, phone, or laptop becomes a passport.
Host a Listening Party
Gather friends for a radio-themed evening where everyone picks a favorite station, show, or classic radio drama to share, and the group votes on the best discovery. Throw in radio trivia and crown a resident disc jockey for the night.
Visit Your Local Station
Look up the community or college radio station nearest you and see if it offers tours, volunteer shifts, or a request line you can call. Send a thank-you note or a shout-out to a local host whose show brightens your routine.
