WORLD SCHOOL MILK DAY

Every year on the last Wednesday of September, classrooms around the world raise a glass to the humblest hero of the school day. World School Milk Day celebrates the school milk programs that deliver nutrition, learning, and a little morning joy to millions of children. In 2027 the day falls on Wednesday, September 29. It is a cheerful global toast to healthy kids, hardworking dairy farmers, and the simple power of a cold carton at break time.

What is school milk, exactly? In dozens of countries, schools distribute milk to pupils as part of official nutrition programs, giving children a daily serving of one of nature’s most complete foods. Milk and dairy products supply calcium, vitamins D and A, B vitamins, zinc, selenium, energy, and protein, nutrients that support growth, strong bones, and learning. A single carton packs a serious punch: for children aged 4 to 6, one carton provides 52 percent of the recommended daily calcium, 59 percent of the iodine, 100 percent of the vitamin B12, and 59 percent of the vitamin B2. For children aged 7 to 10, that same carton delivers 42 percent of daily calcium, 53 percent of iodine, 100 percent of B12, and 47 percent of B2. That is a lot of goodness in one little box.

The global celebration has deliciously deep roots. School milk distribution goes back a century: milk was first distributed to schoolchildren in London in the 1920s, the United Kingdom launched its “Milk in Schools” program in 1934, Chicago schools introduced a school milk program in 1940, and milk entered the United States national school lunch program in 1946. The European Union has run school milk schemes for decades, and since 2017 it has combined fruit, vegetables, and milk into a single program reaching roughly 139,000 schools and 18 million students, funding not only food but also tastings, workshops, farm visits, and school gardens.

World School Milk Day itself began with a conversation. During the 1990s, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was helping countries share information about dairy and school milk programs. That work led to the first International School Milk Conference, held in South Africa in October 1998, with the FAO and the International Dairy Federation involved in organizing it. More meetings followed in 1999 across Europe, Oceania, and the Asia-Pacific region. The idea of dedicating one shared day to school milk was then discussed through the FAO’s Dairy Outlook email forum, and the first World School Milk Day was held in September 2000. The FAO has promoted the event ever since.

The date is chosen so the whole world can celebrate together. The last Wednesday of September was selected so that countries could mark the occasion around the same time each year. In 2026 that meant September 30, and in 2027 it means Wednesday, September 29. Each year, schools, dairy organizations, and communities join in with farm visits, milking demonstrations, educational games, milk sampling, and classroom activities. The celebrations keep growing: the number of participating countries and the variety of events expand every year, reflecting the increasing recognition of how much school milk programs matter.

And they matter on a staggering scale. According to the International Dairy Federation, school milk programs now operate in 55 countries around the world, reaching about 160 million children. Beyond nutrition, these programs contribute to education outcomes, support local economies and farming communities, and help establish healthy dietary habits that can last a lifetime. A carton of milk at school is never just a carton of milk. It is a building block for growing bodies, a lesson in where food comes from, and a daily reminder that someone is looking out for children’s health.

So on the last Wednesday of September, the world says cheers with milk. Classrooms toast with cartons, kids learn about dairy farming, and communities celebrate everyone who makes school milk possible, from the farmers to the teachers to the nutrition programs themselves. Whether your school has a milk program or you are simply raising a glass at home, World School Milk Day is an invitation to appreciate the small daily rituals that keep kids strong. Bottoms up, and make it milk.

The celebrations take wonderfully local flavors. In Ireland, the National Dairy Council invites classrooms across the country to a live webinar with athletes and nutrition experts, pairing the EU School Milk Scheme with its Moo Crew educational resources. In South Africa, teachers run a whole menu of dairy-themed activities, from yogurt tub stilts and milk box car races to milk bottle bowling, with each grade getting its own playful challenge. Around the world, dairy organizations distribute banners, schools host tastings and farm visits, and kids learn about farming, food origins, and balanced diets. Same day, same carton, a thousand different parties.

Parents can join the fun at home too. Pour a glass with breakfast and talk about where milk comes from, try a new dairy recipe together like a fruit smoothie or homemade yogurt parfaits, or let kids design their own milk carton label for the day. Small rituals like these turn an ordinary school-morning drink into a story children remember. After all, the day’s real message is simple: healthy habits start young, and a shared glass of milk is a fine place to begin.

THE STORY BEHIND WORLD SCHOOL MILK DAY

🥛 First Sipped in September 2000
The first World School Milk Day was held in September 2000, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has promoted it ever since. Its roots stretch back through the 1990s, when the FAO was helping countries share knowledge about dairy and school milk programs.

🌎 A Conference in South Africa Started It All
The journey began at the first International School Milk Conference in South Africa in October 1998, organized with the FAO and the International Dairy Federation. More meetings followed in 1999 across Europe, Oceania, and the Asia-Pacific region, and the idea of one shared day was floated on the FAO’s Dairy Outlook email forum.

🏫 From 1920s London to the World
School milk has a century of history: distribution began in London in the 1920s, the United Kingdom launched “Milk in Schools” in 1934, Chicago schools followed in 1940, and milk joined the United States national school lunch program in 1946.

🥂 A Carton Full of Nutrition
Milk delivers calcium, vitamins D and A, B vitamins, zinc, selenium, energy, and protein. One carton gives children aged 4 to 6 their full day’s vitamin B12 plus more than half their calcium and iodine, a remarkable return for a humble drink.

🌐 160 Million Children and Counting
According to the International Dairy Federation, school milk programs now run in 55 countries and reach about 160 million children, supporting nutrition, education outcomes, local farming communities, and lifelong healthy habits.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE

🥛 Toast With a Carton
Organize a class milk toast at break time. Hand out cartons, raise them high, and share one nutrition fact about dairy before the first sip. Simple, joyful, and very on theme.

🐄 Visit a Dairy Farm
Arrange a farm visit or milking demonstration so kids can see where school milk begins. Meeting the cows and the farmers behind the carton turns an everyday drink into a real-world lesson.

🎮 Play Dairy Games
Set up milk bottle bowling, a milk box car race, or yogurt cup towers. Active games built around dairy packaging make the day’s theme stick in the most playful way possible.
