World Hippo Day

Every year on February 15, the river horse deserves its moment in the sun. World Hippo Day celebrates the hippopotamus, the third-largest land mammal on Earth and one of its most gloriously improbable survivors. Every February 15, zoos, classrooms, and safari fans shine a light on these barrel-bodied swimmers and the conservation work that keeps them thriving.

3 ways to celebrate

AT HOME

Hippo Movie Night

Queue up a nature documentary featuring hippos and settle in with hippo-themed snacks like 'muddy' chocolate pudding cups. Challenge the family with hippo trivia between segments, from the Greek roots of the name to the hippo's closest living relative.

WITH FRIENDS

Throw a Hippo Trivia Showdown

Host a World Hippo Day trivia night with rounds on hippo facts, from the meaning of 'hippopotamus' to the 1910 American Hippo Bill. Collect a few dollars per team to donate to a wildlife conservation group in the champion's honor.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Meet a Hippo in Person

Check whether your local zoo or wildlife park has hippos and plan a visit, timing it for feeding or keeper talks. If there is no hippo nearby, 'adopt' one symbolically through a conservation organization to support rangers and researchers protecting wild herds in Africa.

Plan ahead

World Hippo Day is observed on February 15 every year. Here is where it lands for the next ten years, handy for planners, marketers and party people.
