National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day

Every year on the Thursday of the second full week of June, their quiet, steady hands carry the heaviest and most tender work in all of healthcare. On this day, and through the full week that follows, communities across America pause to honor the certified nursing assistants whose compassion shows up in every room, at every hour, for every patient. It is a day of gratitude for the people who lift, bathe, comfort, feed, and watch over those who cannot fully care for themselves. In 2027 the day falls on June 10. This is National Career Nurse Assistants' Day, a heartfelt thank-you to the heart of bedside care, and it is open to absolutely everyone.

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day was created in the late 1970s by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants, and it has been observed every year since. The day kicks off National Nursing Assistants’ Week, a full seven days of recognition that begins each year on the Thursday of the second full week of June. It is deliberately placed at the start of the week so that the celebration unfolds day after day, giving facilities, families, and patients time to honor the aides whose work rarely makes headlines but always makes a difference.

The roots of this profession reach back to World War I. As tens of thousands of nurses deployed alongside soldiers, the strain on hospitals at home and abroad became enormous. In response, the American Red Cross created the Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Service, which trained close to 8,000 volunteer young women to give rudimentary assistance to overworked nurses. They performed basic triage and filled acute-care posts in reserve, field, base, and civilian hospitals, proving themselves to be tireless advocates for the well-being of American soldiers and earning praise for their bravery and strength.

After World War I, the role largely faded away, only to be reinstated by the Red Cross during World War II. When that conflict ended, many of these nursing assistants continued to volunteer, and some were hired on as staff. Over the following decades, large numbers of nursing auxiliaries found their way into nursing homes, where they formed the backbone of daily patient care. Their training at the time was almost entirely on the job, and they were not yet certified professionals.

The 1980s brought a turning point. Concerns grew about the quality of care provided by untrained staff in nursing homes, and the nation answered with reform. President Ronald Reagan signed the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987, a landmark measure to improve nursing homes, and it required certification for nursing assistants. Training programs and accreditation centers multiplied, and the CNA profession entered the modern era as a respected, credentialed career. The job market for certified nursing assistants boomed, and the profession earned the standing it had long deserved.

Observances of the day have been officially on the calendar since 1977, and the tradition has only deepened with time. Facilities now mark the week with awards ceremonies, appreciation banquets, team-building outings, and small tokens like flowers, pins, and gift cards. The gestures vary from town to town, but the message never does: the people who do the most intimate, demanding work in healthcare deserve to be seen, named, and celebrated out loud.

Today, certified nursing assistants work under the supervision of licensed practical and registered nurses, and they serve as a vital liaison between patients and physicians. They bathe patients and keep them clean, help them dress and use the toilet, serve meals and assist with eating, turn and reposition patients between beds and wheelchairs, and record vital signs. It is hard, sometimes unpleasant, and profoundly necessary work. National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day exists so that none of it goes unthanked.

Part of what makes the day so meaningful is how personal the work is. Nursing assistants know their patients’ favorite foods, the way they like their pillows, the names of their grandchildren, and the small rituals that bring them comfort. They are often the first to notice when something is wrong and the last to leave a bedside when a family needs support. Families of long-term care residents frequently describe their loved one’s CNA as part of the family, and that bond, built one gentle interaction at a time, is the quiet miracle at the center of this profession.

THE STORY BEHIND NATIONAL CAREER NURSE ASSISTANTS’ DAY

🩹 The First Day of a Full Week
National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day is the opening day of National Nursing Assistants’ Week, which runs for seven full days beginning on the Thursday of the second full week of June. The placement gives every facility a full week to celebrate, with the day itself setting the tone for events, recognitions, and thank-yous across the country.

💓 A Profession Born in Wartime
The CNA story begins with World War I, when the American Red Cross created the Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Service to support deployed and overwhelmed nurses. Nearly 8,000 volunteer women were trained to assist with triage and acute care in reserve, field, base, and civilian hospitals, and their service demonstrated the courage and stamina that define the profession to this day.

💈 The 1987 Law That Changed Everything
The Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987, signed by President Ronald Reagan to improve nursing homes, required certification for all nursing assistants. That single reform transformed the field: training standards were set, accreditation centers emerged, the CNA job market boomed, and nursing assistants became the credentialed professionals patients rely on today.

🤝 The Liaison Between Patients and Physicians
Certified nursing assistants serve as a bridge between patients and physicians. They spend more face-to-face time with patients than nearly anyone else in healthcare, noticing small changes, offering comfort, and communicating what they see to the nursing team. That daily closeness makes them indispensable advocates for the people in their care.

🎉 Created by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants
The day was founded in the late 1970s by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants to give nursing assistants a day of their own. It has been observed every year since, growing into a national tradition of appreciation that spans hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home health care.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE

📝 Write a Personal Thank-You Note
A handwritten note means more than you might expect. If a certified nursing assistant has cared for you, a parent, a grandparent, or a friend, write down exactly what you remember about their kindness and give it to them on June 10. Specific memories of gentle care are the kind of thanks people keep for years.

🍹 Bring Treats to the Care Team
Nursing assistants work around the clock, including holidays and weekends. Deliver coffee, fresh fruit, or a simple catered lunch to the nursing unit or facility floor during National Nursing Assistants’ Week. Sharing food with the whole team honors every shift, not just the day shift.

👥 Thank Them Publicly in Your Community
Ask your local hospital, nursing home, or senior center how you can support its recognition events for the week, from awards ceremonies to appreciation banquets to simple team outings. Share a public thank-you on social media, tag the facility, and use the day to remind your neighbors that certified nursing assistants are the heartbeat of bedside care. You can also support scholarships for students pursuing careers in service, honoring the next generation of caregivers. A community that thanks its caregivers keeps them.

Celebrate National Career Nurse Assistants’ Day

On June 10, take a quiet moment to honor the certified nursing assistants who show up with skill and tenderness for people at their most vulnerable. Thank one in person, and let their dedication remind you of the best of human care.
