The United Nations established World Day Against Trafficking in Persons in 2013 to encourage governments, civil society, and individuals to take action. Each year, a specific theme is designated to focus attention on particular aspects of trafficking, highlighting the need for comprehensive responses. The 2026 UNODC theme is 'Trapped behind the scam,' spotlighting trafficking for forced criminality in industrial-scale fraud operations.

In the United States, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) was passed in 2000, establishing a framework for combating human trafficking. Awareness campaigns and education programs have since been developed to inform the public about the signs of trafficking and how to report it. Yet, despite these efforts, challenges remain, including the need for more resources devoted to prevention, victim support, and law enforcement training.
