National Massachusetts Day

The observance comes from National Day Calendar's salute to the states, a series launched in 2017 that honored each state in the order it entered the Union, beginning with Delaware that July. Massachusetts, the sixth state to ratify the Constitution, earned its day on August 17, and the proclamation reads like a love letter to the Commonwealth's outsized role in American life.

Massachusetts was the first New England colony and took its name from the Massachusett people who lived there when Europeans arrived. It became, in the proclamation's words, an incubator for independence, education, and industry: home of the Sons of Liberty, the Boston Tea Party, and the ‘shot heard round the world’ at Lexington and Concord. The state wears its nickname, the Cradle of Liberty, with justification.

Beyond the Revolution, the Bay State's contributions stretch in every direction. Harvard University, founded in 1636, and MIT anchor an education and innovation corridor that helped seed the technology economy. Its literary lights include Emily Dickinson, its inventors and architects reshaped skylines, and its kitchens gave America clam chowder, the lobster roll, and Boston cream pie.
