Fast facts

Before the Eid prayer, every able Muslim gives Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable gift of food or money so that people in need can also celebrate.
Celebrations typically last up to three days, and children often receive Eidi, gifts of money or sweets from elders.

The story

Eid al-Fitr means the Festival of Breaking the Fast, and it celebrates the completion of the month of Ramadan fasting. It falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, the day after the last fast of Ramadan. The first Eid al-Fitr was celebrated in Medina around 624 CE, in the second year of the Hijri calendar.

The morning begins with a special congregational Eid prayer, held in mosques and open prayer grounds shortly after sunrise. Before the prayer, every able Muslim gives Zakat al-Fitr, an obligatory charitable gift of food or money, given so that people in need can also celebrate the day.

Sweet dishes are the signature foods of the festival, which is nicknamed the Sweet Eid in Turkey. Favorites include baklava and Turkish delight in Turkey, date-filled pastries in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, sheer khurma in South Asia, and honey cake in Yemen. People greet one another with Eid Mubarak, meaning Have a blessed Eid, often with embraces, family visits, and gifts for children.

Celebrations commonly last up to three days. March 9, 2027 is the expected date, based on the calculated calendar; because the month of Shawwal begins with the sighting of the crescent moon, some communities may mark the festival a day later by local sighting. Whenever it falls, it arrives as a joyful reward at the end of a month of fasting and prayer.
