What is World Tourism Day? It is an international observance, led by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, that raises awareness of tourism’s role within the international community and demonstrates how travel affects social, cultural, political, and economic values worldwide. Tourism is one of the world’s largest economic sectors: according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, travel and tourism accounted for 10.4 percent of global GDP in 2019 and provided jobs to more than 319 million people. Over one in ten people on earth is employed in the tourism industry. The day is a reminder that every trip, from a beach holiday to a hometown walking tour, ripples through real lives and livelihoods.

The date was chosen with intention. September 27 marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970, a milestone in global tourism that signaled the beginning of a coordinated international effort to promote responsible and inclusive travel. In 1980, a decade later, the UNWTO General Assembly formally adopted World Tourism Day as an official celebration at its session in Torremolinos, Spain. The first official celebration followed on September 27, 1981, in Madrid, Spain, and the day has been observed annually ever since, in various host countries around the world.

The idea has a named champion. The late Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, a Nigerian national, proposed marking September 27 of every year as World Tourism Day at a meeting of the International Union of Official Travel Organisation in Ankara, Turkey, in 1971. He was finally recognized for his contribution in 2009. His proposal planted a seed that grew into one of the most widely observed days on the international calendar, a fitting legacy for a man who believed the world should set aside a day to think about how travel brings people together.

Since 1997, the celebrations have had a host. At its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1997, the UNWTO General Assembly decided to designate a host country each year to act as the organization’s partner in the celebration. At its Fifteenth Session in Beijing, China, in October 2003, the Assembly decided on a geographic order for the celebrations: 2006 in Europe, 2007 in South Asia, 2008 in the Americas, 2009 in Africa, and 2011 in the Middle East. Each host country lends its own culture and color to the day, turning the observance into a traveling showcase of the world’s diversity.

Every year also brings a fresh theme, and the themes trace the industry’s evolving conscience. Some of the early themes focused on tourism’s driving role in international peace and understanding: in 1981, “Tourism’s Contribution to International Peace and Understanding,” and in 1983, “Overcoming Obstacles to Tourism Expansion and Improving the Image of Tourism.” As the years went on, the central themes turned toward sustainable tourism, culture, youth, and tourism ethics. “Tourism: Celebrating Diversity” in 1995 and “Sustainable Tourism: A Tool for Development” in 2005 underscored how seriously the sector takes its responsibilities to people and planet.

The day’s deeper purpose goes beyond vacations. Tourism shapes economies, cultures, and communities globally, and the observance has grown into a platform for nations and organizations to showcase innovations, confront challenges, and explore the future of travel. It asks travelers and the industry alike to think about impact: the service workers in restaurants and hotels, the transport workers, the souvenir makers, the tour guides, and the staff at sightseeing locations whose hard work makes every simple day out possible. Travel is joyful, and it is also a system of millions of livelihoods worth honoring.

Even the day has a signature color: blue, the color of open skies and open water, of horizons and the journeys that cross them. And the date itself carries a lovely symmetry, chosen because the peak tourism season in the Northern Hemisphere meets the peak tourism season in the Southern Hemisphere around this time of year. September 27 belongs to the whole planet at once, which is exactly what a day about travel should do.

How you celebrate is up to you, and the options are as wide as the world. Be a tourist in your own town and discover a street you have never walked. Plan the trip you have been dreaming about. Travel responsibly, respect the cultures you visit, and support local businesses and guides. Or simply share a favorite journey, a photo, a story, a meal that tasted like somewhere else. Since 1981, September 27 has reminded the world that tourism is not only about destinations but about shared experiences, respect for cultures, and building bridges between people. On World Tourism Day, the bridge is yours to cross.

The observance keeps evolving with the times. In 2026 the festivities unfolded in El Salvador, which stepped into the spotlight as host country for the very first time, bringing tourism ministers, industry leaders, and technology companies together. The theme centered on how artificial intelligence is already influencing travel decisions, from AI-powered trip planning to destination recommendations, and called on destinations, businesses, and policymakers to shape that shift responsibly. From peace and understanding in 1981 to AI and sustainable transformation today, the day has always met the travel industry exactly where it lives.
